10 Must Have iPhone Apps Part 1

August 16, 2008
iTunes App Store

The iPhone App Store came out over a month ago. Over that time, I’ve installed and uninstalled numerous 3rd party applications. I’ll give you a quick rundown of the apps that currently remain on my iPhone.

  1. OmniFocus - A to-do list app on steroids. For many, it might be overkill. But if you follow David Allen’s Getting Things Done method for productivity, this app will serve you well. It can even wirelessly sync to your desktop copy of OmniFocus via Mobile Me. The cost is $19.99.
  2. Evernote - Fantastic note taking/organizing application. They also make a client the Mac and PC. All notes are synchronized to a central online database that’s password protected. The app and service are free but if you want more storage, an additional fee is involved.
  3. Twitterrific - Clean and simple Twitter client. In addition to the commercial version, there’s also one that’s ad-supported. Any moderate to heavy user of Twitter will appreciate this program. The commercial version costs $9.99.
  4. SpeakEasy - Like tip calculators, there are a lot voice recording apps to choose from. SpeakEasy is one of the best. It has an excellent interface and I’ve been satisfied by the overall voice quality. The only weak point is the fact that you can’t export the audio from your iPhone. I have to think this is something the developers will look into in future upgrades. If audio export is important to you, for now, look elsewhere. Aside from that, this app is nearly flawless. SpeakEasy costs $1.99.
  5. Pandora - Input some of your favorite musical artists into this app and it will create a custom streaming radio station that will play songs from those artists as well as other artists who share the same style. You can increase the accuracy of Pandora’s musical selections by voting a thumbs up or thumbs down on individual tracks. Pandora is free.

Do you have any favorite apps that you’d like to share? Let me know in the comments. In part 2, I’ll focus more on gaming.
