Frequently Asked Questions

The ABB Inora BL331-885 is a single-gang Category 5e data socket designed to provide a fixed network connection point for Ethernet cabling. It combines ABB Inora styling with a Starry Black finish, making it suitable for modern offices, homes, hotels, retail units and other UAE construction or fit-out projects requiring one wired data outlet.

When correctly terminated as part of a compliant Category 5e channel, the socket can support Ethernet applications up to 1 Gigabit per second, subject to the connected cable, patch panel, patch cords, network equipment and total channel length. Final performance depends on the entire structured cabling system rather than the outlet alone.

Use a genuine Category 5e or higher-rated four-pair copper data cable that matches the project specification. Solid-conductor cable is normally used for permanent building links, while stranded patch cords are used between the outlet and connected device. Cable conductor size, shielding arrangement and fire-performance rating should be confirmed against the socket termination requirements and UAE project documents.

Isolate nearby electrical circuits, install the compatible wall box or mounting enclosure, route the data cable without crushing or sharp bends, remove only the necessary outer sheath and terminate each conductor according to the outlet markings. Maintain the pair twists as close as possible to the termination, secure the cable without excessive pressure, fit the socket into the box and test the completed link before handover. Installation should be completed by a qualified ELV or structured-cabling technician.

Either T568A or T568B may be used if supported by the terminal colour code, but the same scheme must be maintained at both ends of the cable. T568B is common in many commercial installations, although the approved consultant specification and existing site standard should always take priority. Mixing T568A and T568B unintentionally creates a crossover configuration and may cause commissioning issues.

Keep data cables separated from mains power cables according to the approved project specification, avoid tight bends and over-tensioning, do not untwist conductor pairs more than necessary and keep the permanent link within the applicable structured-cabling length limits. Avoid running the cable close to transformers, motors, variable-frequency drives and other electromagnetic interference sources. Proper containment, labelling, termination and field testing are essential for reliable performance.

It may form part of a Power over Ethernet link for devices such as IP phones, wireless access points and compatible cameras, provided the complete cabling channel, terminations and network equipment support the required IEEE PoE standard and power level. For higher-power PoE applications or large cable bundles, cable category, conductor size, temperature rise and project requirements should be reviewed by the network designer.

Yes, it is suitable for indoor structured-network installations in UAE villas, apartments, offices, hotels, shops and similar buildings where a single wired Ethernet point is required. The Starry Black finish can coordinate with dark interior accessories. For hot, humid, dusty or exposed locations, use a suitable rated enclosure and verify the environmental requirements, as a standard indoor data outlet should not be assumed to be weatherproof.

It can be positioned in the same room or workstation area as a power outlet, but data and power wiring should remain correctly segregated. Where combined service boxes or shared trunking systems are used, approved partitions and separate compartments should be provided as required by the project specification and applicable electrical and ELV practices. This helps reduce interference and supports safer maintenance.

Yes, the outlet is relevant to office fit-outs, hospitality projects, retail spaces, residential developments and other construction applications requiring a single CAT.5e data point. Before bulk procurement, contractors should confirm compatibility with the specified ABB Inora plates, mounting boxes, cable type, colour schedule, bill of quantities and consultant-approved structured cabling system.

The completed structured cabling installation should follow the approved project specification and applicable standards such as ISO/IEC 11801 and ANSI/TIA-568, where specified. UAE authority requirements, the relevant emirate's building and electrical regulations, and UAE Fire and Life Safety Code requirements for cable fire performance and penetrations may also apply. Approval obligations vary by project, so contractors should verify them with the consultant and relevant authority.

At minimum, test wire map, continuity, pair arrangement and connection faults. For formal project handover, use a calibrated field cable certifier to verify the permanent link or channel against the specified Category 5e limit, including parameters such as insertion loss, return loss and crosstalk. Each outlet should be labelled and its test result linked to the corresponding patch-panel port.

A standards-based copper Ethernet channel is generally limited to 100 metres, typically comprising up to 90 metres of permanent horizontal cable plus patch cords and equipment cords within the remaining allowance. Design teams should account for routing, consolidation points and patch-cord lengths before installation rather than measuring only the direct distance between rooms.

It is primarily intended as an Ethernet data outlet and is well suited to compatible IP phones connected through an RJ45 network interface. Other low-voltage communication uses depend on the system design and pin assignment. Contractors should not connect incompatible analogue, proprietary or mains-voltage circuits to a data socket without confirming the equipment and cabling requirements.

Disconnect connected equipment if necessary and wipe the visible surface with a soft, dry or slightly damp cloth. Do not use abrasive pads, aggressive solvents or excessive water, as these may damage the finish or enter the contacts. During periodic network maintenance, inspect the socket for looseness, contamination or physical damage and retest the link if performance problems occur.
