Frequently Asked Questions

The ABB Inora BL508-G is a switched fused connection unit, commonly called a switched fused spur or FCU, designed to provide local isolation and fuse protection for a fixed electrical appliance or a spur from a socket circuit. It has a rated current of 13A and a Classic Grey finish, making it suitable for coordinated electrical installations in homes, offices, shops and other UAE construction projects.

A 13A switched fused connection unit is used to connect and control fixed or permanently wired equipment while providing appliance-level overcurrent protection through a replaceable fuse. Typical applications can include water heaters, extractor fans, kitchen equipment, ventilation units, pumps and selected air-conditioning accessories, provided the connected load, cable size and manufacturer requirements are compatible with a 13A fused supply.

A standard wall switch generally provides switching or isolation only. A fused connection unit combines switching with fuse protection for the outgoing appliance cable. This makes an FCU useful when connecting lower-rated fixed equipment to a circuit that may have a higher-rated protective device. The upstream circuit breaker still protects the circuit wiring, while the FCU fuse helps protect the connected flex, cable or appliance.

The 13A FCU format is widely used in UAE residential, commercial and hospitality projects influenced by British wiring practices. Suitability must still be confirmed against the project's approved specifications, the appliance load and applicable requirements from the relevant UAE authority, such as DEWA, ADDC or the local distribution company. Installation should follow current BS 7671 principles where specified and all applicable UAE electrical regulations.

UAE low-voltage installations commonly operate at approximately 230V and 50Hz for single-phase loads. However, the FCU's exact voltage rating and applicable product standard should be verified on the product marking, packaging or ABB technical documentation before installation. The connected appliance must also be rated for the available supply voltage and frequency.

Installation should be completed by a qualified electrician with the circuit safely isolated, locked off where required and proven dead. The supply and load conductors must be identified and connected to the correctly marked terminals, with the protective earth conductor securely terminated. Use a compatible wall box, suitable conductor size and the fuse rating required by the appliance manufacturer. Terminal screws should be tightened to ABB's specified torque, and the circuit should be inspected, tested and labelled before energisation.

A fused connection unit is commonly used to supply a fused spur from a ring final circuit in installations designed according to BS 7671 practices. Whether it is permitted in a specific UAE project depends on the circuit design, cable size, existing loading, protective device, number of spurs and local authority requirements. The circuit arrangement should be assessed by a qualified electrical engineer or electrician before installation.

The fuse must be selected to protect the connected appliance and its supply cable, not simply chosen at the maximum 13A rating. Depending on the appliance manufacturer's instructions and load, a lower-rated fuse may be required. Use only a correctly rated, approved cartridge fuse compatible with the FCU, commonly a BS 1362-type fuse where specified. Never bypass the fuse or replace it with wire, foil or an unsuitable component.

It may be suitable for a small water heater when the appliance's normal current does not exceed the FCU rating and the manufacturer specifies a fused 13A connection. Many larger storage heaters and instantaneous water heaters draw more than 13A and require a dedicated circuit and higher-rated isolator. An electrician should calculate the load from the appliance nameplate and confirm cable sizing, isolation and circuit protection.

It may be used for certain low-current air-conditioning controls, condensate pumps, ventilation equipment or small pumps when the full-load current and starting current are within the unit's rating. It should not automatically be used as the main isolator for larger motors or air-conditioning compressors. Motor loads may require a dedicated circuit, suitable motor protection and an isolator rated for the equipment's starting characteristics.

Do not assume that a standard decorative FCU is weatherproof. For outdoor locations, wash areas, plant rooms or other damp and dusty environments, it should be installed only within a suitable enclosure providing the required IP rating and environmental protection. UAE conditions such as heat, humidity, dust and UV exposure must be considered, along with appropriate RCD protection and local electrical regulations.

Use a compatible flush or surface mounting box with enough depth for the device, conductor bends and safe terminal clearance. Cable type and cross-sectional area must be selected according to the circuit design, installation method, ambient temperature, grouping, voltage drop and protective device. In UAE construction projects, verify box compatibility, wiring accessories schedule and approved cable specifications before procurement or installation.

After installation, a qualified electrician should perform the tests required for the circuit and project, which may include protective conductor continuity, insulation resistance, polarity, earth fault loop impedance, RCD operation and functional switching checks. Confirm that the correct fuse is fitted, terminals are secure and the connected appliance operates safely. Test results should be recorded where required by the consultant, contractor or UAE authority.

The Classic Grey finish can complement contemporary interiors, exposed-service areas, kitchens, offices and coordinated grey electrical accessory schedules. ABB is a recognised electrical brand, while the Inora range allows contractors and designers to maintain a consistent appearance across wiring accessories. Always confirm the model number BL508-G, finish, rating and compatibility with the project's approved material submittal before ordering.

Keep the connected load within the unit and fuse ratings, use the switch for local control only as intended, and isolate the upstream supply before replacing a fuse or carrying out maintenance. Investigate repeated fuse operation instead of fitting a higher-rated fuse. Signs such as overheating, discolouration, buzzing, loose operation or a burning smell require immediate isolation and inspection by a qualified electrician.
