Features & Benefits

Weatherproof IP66 Protection

The IP66-rated enclosure provides complete protection against dust ingress and resistance to powerful water jets, making the switch suitable for demanding indoor and outdoor locations exposed to moisture, dust, rain or routine washdowns.

1 Gang Switch Configuration

The single-gang design controls one lighting or electrical circuit from a compact wall-mounted unit, providing a practical solution for residential, commercial, industrial and utility areas where weather protection is required.

2 Way Switching

The two-way switching arrangement allows a connected circuit to be operated from two separate switch locations when installed with a compatible second switch, making it convenient for corridors, stairways, entrances, garages and larger outdoor areas.

16AX Rated Switching Capacity

The 16AX rating is designed to handle lighting circuits, including loads that may produce higher switching currents, offering dependable operation for suitable residential and commercial lighting applications when correctly selected and installed.

ABB Model WSW211

Manufactured by ABB under model WSW211, this switch provides clear product identification for specification, installation planning, compatible accessory selection and future maintenance or replacement requirements.

Suitable for UAE Installation Environments

The weather-resistant construction is well suited to exposed and dusty conditions commonly encountered across the UAE. Installation should be completed by a qualified electrician in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions and applicable UAE electrical regulations.

Frequently Asked Questions

The ABB WSW211 is a weatherproof, single-gang electrical switch designed to control one lighting circuit. Its two-way switching configuration allows the same circuit to be operated from two locations when paired with another compatible two-way switch. The 16AX rating is intended for lighting loads, including loads with higher switching inrush, while the IP66 enclosure provides strong protection against dust and powerful water jets when correctly installed.

“1 gang” means the switch controls one circuit. “2 way” means it can be connected with a second two-way switch to control that circuit from two locations, such as both ends of a corridor or at the top and bottom of a staircase. “16AX” indicates a 16 A switching rating designed for lighting circuits, with the AX designation accounting for the demanding inrush characteristics of certain fluorescent, inductive and electronic lighting loads.

An IP66 rating indicates complete protection against dust ingress and protection against powerful water jets, based on the IP classification principles of IEC 60529. This makes the switch suitable for exposed and dusty locations. The rating depends on correct installation, including secure cover closure, undamaged seals, suitable IP-rated cable glands and properly sealed mounting entries.

Yes, its weatherproof IP66 construction makes it suitable for many UAE outdoor and semi-outdoor applications, including villas, gardens, terraces, warehouses, workshops, service yards and construction facilities. Installers should position it to reduce unnecessary direct exposure to standing water, prolonged irrigation spray and physical impact. Project-specific temperature, UV exposure and authority requirements should also be checked before installation.

The UAE commonly uses a 230 V, 50 Hz low-voltage supply. The switch may be used only where the voltage, load type and circuit current are within the manufacturer’s marked ratings. The product label, ABB technical documentation, approved project specification and applicable local electrical regulations should be verified by a qualified electrician before connection.

Typical applications include outdoor staircases, long corridors, warehouse entrances, parking access routes, plant rooms, rooftop service areas, garden lighting and building perimeter lighting. Two-way switching is useful where one luminaire or lighting group must be controlled from two separate access points, improving convenience and safe movement around a building.

For two-way operation, two compatible two-way switches are normally connected using a common conductor and two traveller or strapper conductors. The permanent live supply enters the common terminal of one switch, while the switched live to the lighting load leaves the common terminal of the second switch. Terminal identification and the ABB wiring diagram must be followed because terminal layouts can vary. Power must be isolated, locked out and tested dead before work begins, and installation should be completed by a licensed electrician.

A two-way switch can generally be configured for one-way control by using the common terminal and one of the switched terminals, subject to the manufacturer’s wiring diagram. The unused terminal should remain unconnected and safely enclosed. A qualified electrician should confirm the correct terminal arrangement and ensure the circuit complies with the approved electrical design.

Use correctly sized IP-rated cable glands, retain all factory seals, tighten enclosure screws evenly and seal only the entries intended for cable installation. The mounting surface should be stable and reasonably flat so the enclosure does not distort. Any drilled or unused entry must be sealed with a compatible weatherproof plug. Damaged gaskets, poorly fitted conduits or open cable entries can reduce the installed IP protection.

It can be incorporated into a suitable surface-mounted conduit installation when compatible glands, adaptors and entry seals are used. The conduit arrangement should prevent water from collecting or draining into the enclosure. For outdoor construction work, contractors should coordinate the switch, conduit and accessories so the complete installed system maintains the required ingress protection and meets the project specification.

It may be used for compatible LED lighting circuits, but LED drivers can produce high inrush current that is not represented by lamp wattage alone. The total driver load, inrush current, switching frequency and manufacturer’s permitted LED load should be checked. For large groups of LED fittings, the switch may need to control a suitably rated contactor rather than directly switching the full lighting load.

No, it should not automatically be treated as a safety isolator. It is a functional switch for controlling a circuit and may not provide the pole separation, isolation indication or disconnection arrangement required for maintenance isolation. Equipment such as pumps, air-conditioning units and outdoor machinery should use an appropriately rated local isolator where required by the electrical design and UAE regulations.

Its IP66 rating supports use in wet or wash-down environments, but the permitted mounting location depends on electrical safety zones, circuit protection and local regulations. In bathrooms or similar areas, installers must consider the required distance from water sources, residual-current protection, earthing and the project’s authority-approved design. IP66 protection alone does not override wiring-zone restrictions.

Cable size and protective-device rating must be selected according to the connected load, installation method, ambient temperature, grouping, voltage drop and fault conditions. The 16AX marking is the switch rating and does not mean every installation should use a 16 A protective device. The circuit breaker or RCBO must protect the cable and connected equipment in accordance with the approved UAE electrical design.

Contractors should confirm the product’s ABB technical data, rated voltage, terminal capacity, IP classification and applicable IEC conformity documentation. They should also check the consultant’s specification and requirements of the relevant UAE authority, such as DEWA or the applicable emirate utility and civil authority. For project submittals, use current manufacturer datasheets and certificates rather than relying only on the product name.
