Frequently Asked Questions

The ABB Inora BL180WH-G is a classic grey, single-gang, one-way double-pole switch designed to control one electrical circuit from one location. Its 20AX rating makes it suitable for appropriately rated fixed electrical loads, while the integrated LED marked ON provides a clear visual indication of the switch status. It is intended for residential, commercial and construction electrical installations where double-pole isolation is required.

One gang means the plate contains one switch control. One way means the connected circuit is operated from a single location rather than from two different switch points. Double pole, or DP, means the switch disconnects both the live and neutral conductors at the same time, providing more complete isolation than a single-pole switch. The protective earth conductor must remain continuous and must not be switched.

The 20AX marking identifies the switch's rated current category and its suitability for loads that may have higher switching inrush, subject to ABB's technical documentation and the connected equipment specifications. It should not be selected only by comparing the appliance's normal running current with 20 A. Starting current, load type, cable size, protective device rating, ambient temperature and local electrical regulations must also be considered by a qualified electrician.

The LED provides a visible indication that the switch is in the ON position or that the controlled circuit is energised, depending on the product's terminal arrangement. This is useful for equipment such as water heaters, ventilation units and other fixed loads that may not provide an obvious operating indication at the switch location. The electrician should follow the ABB wiring diagram supplied with the product because indicator wiring can vary between switch designs.

It may be used as a local control and isolation switch for a compatible fixed electrical load, including selected water heaters, ventilation equipment, utility appliances and similar building services. Final suitability depends on the equipment load, starting current, manufacturer instructions, circuit design and required isolation method. It should not be used as a substitute for a circuit breaker, residual-current protection device or dedicated isolator where regulations require one.

It is relevant to UAE projects using the typical 230 V, 50 Hz low-voltage supply, provided its confirmed voltage rating, load category and installation method match the approved project design. Installation should comply with applicable UAE electrical regulations, the relevant authority requirements and the project's specifications. Depending on the emirate and project, these may include requirements issued by DEWA, EtihadWE, ADDC or the relevant local utility, together with applicable IEC or BS-based wiring practices.

Installation must be completed by a licensed or qualified electrician. The supply should be isolated, locked out where practical and proven dead using an approved tester. The electrician should verify the circuit and back-box compatibility, identify the incoming and outgoing live and neutral conductors, connect them to the correct double-pole terminals according to ABB's diagram, maintain earth continuity, tighten terminals to the specified torque, fit the switch level with the wall finish and test polarity, insulation, continuity, operation and LED indication before energising.

Cable size and protective-device selection cannot be determined from the switch rating alone. They must be calculated according to the connected load, installation method, conductor material, cable length, voltage drop, ambient temperature, grouping and fault conditions. The circuit breaker or fuse must protect the cable and equipment, while RCD or RCBO protection should be provided where required by UAE authority rules, the project specification and the relevant wiring standard.

It may be suitable for controlling and locally isolating a water heater when the heater's rated current, switching characteristics and manufacturer's instructions are compatible with the switch. The installer must also confirm whether the project requires a higher-rated isolator, a dedicated circuit, an accessible means of isolation or additional RCD or RCBO protection. For bathroom installations, the switch location and enclosure must comply with the applicable wet-area zoning and electrical safety requirements.

Do not assume that the standard switch plate is weatherproof, because no IP rating is stated in the supplied product information. For outdoor, dusty, humid or wash-down locations, it should only be installed inside a suitably rated weatherproof enclosure or replaced with an accessory carrying the required IP rating. In bathrooms and other wet areas, installation must also respect prescribed electrical zones, safe mounting locations and local authority requirements.

Suitability must be checked carefully because air conditioners, pumps and motors can draw starting currents substantially above their normal running current. A 20AX wall switch may not be an acceptable direct switching or isolation device for every motor load. The equipment manufacturer, approved electrical design and ABB load-category data should be reviewed; many installations require a correctly rated double-pole isolator, contactor or motor control device instead.

Before ordering or fixing the switch, verify that the selected flush or surface back box matches the ABB Inora plate dimensions, mounting centres and required wiring depth. Allow enough space for double-pole conductors without sharp bends or terminal strain. On UAE construction sites, the box should be aligned with the final plaster, tile or cladding level, protected from cement and paint contamination, and kept dry and clean until final electrical fit-out.

A standard light switch commonly controls only the live conductor and may have a lower or different load rating. This ABB Inora 20AX DP switch simultaneously disconnects live and neutral and includes an ON indicator, making it more appropriate for selected fixed appliances and building-service circuits. The correct accessory must always be chosen from the circuit design rather than using a double-pole switch as a universal replacement.

The electrician should confirm secure termination, protective-conductor continuity, correct polarity, insulation resistance, effective double-pole disconnection and proper operation of the LED indication. The circuit protective device and any RCD or RCBO should also be tested in accordance with the approved inspection procedure. The faceplate should sit firmly and evenly, with no exposed copper, damaged insulation, unusual heating, arcing sounds or loose movement.

Isolate the circuit before inspection or cleaning. Wipe the faceplate with a soft, dry or lightly damp cloth and avoid abrasive pads, solvents, strong chemicals or direct water spray. Arrange inspection by a qualified electrician if the switch becomes hot, discoloured, cracked, loose or noisy, if the LED behaves abnormally, or if there is a burning smell or intermittent supply.
