Primers

Choose the primer that matches your surface and the topcoat in your specification. One primer does not suit every surface.
Thinner
- National Paints NC Thinner, 18 L: a solvent for thinning nitrocellulose (NC) paints and lacquers and for cleaning spray equipment.
Use NC thinner only with coatings that call for it. Water-based emulsions are thinned with clean water, as per the label. Thinner is flammable, so use it in a ventilated area away from heat.
Enamel

Prime bare metal or wood first, as advised on the label.
Paint remover

How to paint a masonry wall: the basic sequence
- Prepare: make sure the surface is clean, dry and sound. Use paint remover only where old coatings must come off.
- Prime: apply a suitable primer, such as PVA primer on plaster and masonry.
- Topcoat: apply two coats of emulsion, or enamel where the specification calls for it.
- Allow drying time: follow the recoat time on the label.
- UAE conditions: avoid painting exterior walls in direct midday sun, and allow extra drying time in humid coastal areas.
